Apart from storage, are there any differences between the older PS3, Super Slim PS3 and the 500GB PS3?

Digital Foundry did a test and discovered the newest PS3 has a poorer quality Blu-Ray drive which can increase loading times. Also from hands on experience the newest PS3 feels a lot flimsier. Personally I still think the origina Slim PS3 is the better option all things considered, it feels the best built and is a decent size.
  • I currently have one of the older PS3s (40GB I think). I think I'll just upgrade the HDD to 500GB for £40 :)

I have both the slim and super slim.

I don't like the drive bay on the super slim, it tends to open a bit too easily, the auto loader on the slim is much nicer and its not really much bigger.

On the other hand the super slim was half the price of the slim...

The originals have extra hardware that allowed it to support a Linux install, which got removed in a firware update to much annoyance.
  • Slightly off topic, but what's the average size of a game save on the PS3? I have the 60GB console, so I'm wondering if I'll be better off by upgrading the hard drive.

It's more game installs you need to worry about rather than the saves, there's quite a few game that have mandatory installs of a few gigs each which can quickly eat into hard drive space as can any games or demos you download. If you're planning on using the PS3 for gaming (rather media consumption which the PS3 is popular for) it's well worth considering upgrading the drive particularly given it's pretty cheap and easy to do.

You can get a 500Gb drive for as little as £40 and swapping them is easy (though you have to follow instructions to copy data over).

There are also subtle differences in number of USB ports and things I think.

I'd go for a slim one, they look nice and are more compact than the original PS3 which is pretty bulky (I have one).
  • I have one of the original PS3 and compared to the newer ones it has 4 USB ports not 2, the newer units also lost the CF, SD and MS card slots, the ability to play Super-CD and the PS2 processor and graphics chip to enable it to play PS2 games.

They lost most of that after the first 60Gb model, particularly the emotion engine and back compatability. Those models are very sought after now.
  • What's the maximum-sized GB hard drive can the PS3 take?

I have one of those too, pre-ordered it for release, and is still going strong! However i couldn't be doing with the 60gb drive, so upgraded to a 320gb drive. Didn't realise they were sort after though
