Does he have a receipt from his previous company?
Or was the company his?
If the former can you confirm the sale by contacting the company?

Golden rule for private sellers buying from anything other than trade premises is to get a full, genuine, insurance backed HPi report. Accept no other substitute.

I agree about the genuine insurance backed HPi report (many of the cheap ones aren't or only give very limited protection) although in this case the HPi insurance wouldn't cover the purchase because it has to be bought from the registered keeper at the address on the V5 I believe.
