Real-life MMD: I've enough money not to work, so I give ALL my earnings to charity...

I read this MMD with real sadness. How tragic that, instead of praising you for doing something unbelievably positive, or at the very least minding their own business, your colleagues have sought to critisise you. If you want to, you should keep working. Although you might want to find another job with new work colleagues as the ones you have sound very judgemental.0

This is incredibly generous of you and I applaud your attitude utterly.
It is very, very wrong of your HR department to have let this slip and I think you have every right to take up a formal grievance against them (I accept this may not make you friends but it will force people to look at the root cause, which is so obviously jealousy from someone in HR).
Some people don't work for the money - some people do jobs because they like the ability to have a structure to the day and I think it's a great place to be in.
Are you good at your job and do you do it well? I have no doubt of the answer to this and that's all an employer can ask of its employees. The fact you give all your wages to charity is just even better and demonstrates the sort of employee you are.
Screw everyone else and their BS jealousy - your salary is yours to do with as you wish - would people be happier if you blew it all on fast cars and fancy lunches?0 -
I think if you enjoy your job and get satisfaction from donating your wage you should continue doing so. People will always have an opinion but it s you who is living this life - I would continue.0

In my opinion keep working if it is what you like. Have a selfless attitude as you work and help your colleagues. The company will benefit. If you are giving your income to charity then society is benefiting. Well done for making this decision:T0

I understand that this whole scenario should never have happened and that it is a breach of confidence however, I think it is a bit selfish - all about your mental health, and how good you feel...
There are a lot of people that are unemployed and victimised for being unemployed. Some work a lot harder than people in employment in their efforts to get a job paying the minimum wage... It is not fair to assume that all unemployed people are incapable of doing a professional job. It might help an unemployed person's mental health to be given a chance.0 -
Firstly, I think its shocking that your wages dept has let slip this personal info about what you do with your wages. I would put in a formal complaint about that to your superiors!
Secondly, it is wonderful that you are able and want to give your wages to charity - there are so many people out there who cant be bothered to work, you dont have to but you choose to - thats just great.
Any negative comments from your co-workers is just jelousy as they would probably rather sit at home watching day time TV and eating junk food.
You should be proud and continue doing whatever makes you happy. I think your great! :A0 -
It's absolutely nobody else's business what you do with the money you earn. There are those saying you're taking a job when there are people unemployed and desperate to work.
The answer's simple - do everything you can to get the blabbermouth who leaked this information fired. A shocking and unacceptable breach of confidentiality.
That would then create a job for someone more deserving - I'm sure there are plenty of unemployed people out there who understand that confidential information should stay confidential.0 -
I think you should carry on working, what you do with your wages is absolutely nobody elses business. This way you are helping a good number of people, if you quit you would only help one person. Looking at it from another angle, suppose the private income dries up? If you had quit working you would have nothing to fall back on. I do think a strongly worded complaint to payroll is in order though, that is appalling. What other information have they 'let slip' about staff?
I had a similar situation as a manager, one of my staff was very well off,her husband had a chain of shops which he sold, and had a extremely well paid job as a consultant, travelling the world. The lady worked for me ,part-time, even though she had absolutely no need to . She was the best worker in the team, keen, eager, thorough, accurate, flexible, etc etc. As her husband went away a lot,and liked her to go with him if she could,I was flexible with her attendance, and she would work full time to make up hours etc. Othere staff would moan about her working, saying 'she doesn't need the money' but as I often pointed out to them, she didn't do it for the money, she did it because she loved the job,she wanted to do the best she could at the job, and actually generated more sales and revenue for us than a lot of the full time staff who were only there for the money and didn't actually care about the job. In fact, she carried on working throughout chemotherapy for cancer (twice).
If you enjoy your job, and are good at it , then carry on doing it.0 -
Entirely up to you what you do with life and what you spend it on.
Those complaining,,, do they drink excessively, or smoke, or drive their vehicle in an unsafe way, then it is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.0 -
Your workers are just jelous. If it makes you happy to work, keep at it. You're giving enough to society by giving your wages to charity. What do your jelous co-workers do to benefit society? Do they give any of thier time? Do they make financial contributions? Do they do sponsored events? I bet the answer is no for most of them! Jelousy is such a nasty trait!0
