Gas Switching problems

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me here - or at least maybe explain a process properly so I know who I can get in touch with so I can take it up further with them as I'm starting to feel my list of options is exhausted.

Back in December I completed the purchase of my first property. I found out who the gas and electricity suppliers were - Eon - so contacted them to take the account over. All seemed fine, until a couple of weeks later I received a letter to say I was leaving them, which I wasn't. When I called eon, they said a request from British gas had been made to take the gas supply back. I had not spoken to British gas, or signed any paperwork to move the account. So eon put in an erroneous transfer request to get the supply back - account details set up - all was good.

Until a month or so later it happened again, and again, and again. Only with the latest time I've not received a letter from eon to notify me I'm apparently leaving - so the first thing I knew was when I received my bill, expecting dual fuel charges and just got electricity.

The last couple of times I have got in touch with British gas to try and find out what has gone on. The first time I spoke to someone who seemed more interested in what I was up to at the weekend, but confirmed they had no has supply registered against my property. Today I called them again as advised by eon, to try and determine why they keep requesting my gas supply back when I haven't even contacted them in the first place - only wasting 20 minutes on the phone to be told "oh it's not a person requesting it - it's something to do with the process of the transfer Inbetween suppliers that keeps sending it back to us".

I'm at the end of my tether now - as I don't have a landline so have to make all these calls from my mobile which is running up large bills. I've also never received any paperwork from British Gas saying my gas is now being supplied by them.

So can anyone tell me where to try next? I get the same story from both energy suppliers every time! What is this "process" in the middle the representative from British gas was telling me about? Does something need changing elsewhere?

Any help you could provide would be useful. Thanks :)

As you are supplied by Eon, give them your address and meter serial number. They will then check the industry database xoserve to see that all is correct. If it keeps happening there must be a problem especially if it is a new property that had plot numbers. If there is a problem on the database Eon will then need to get it corrected.

  • I have already done that and they have confirmed to me the meter number is correct for the address of the property, and the corresponding plot number is also correct.

Call from mobiles will cost considerably more

Hopefully you were aware of this when you decided not to have a landline but opted for an expensive mobile phone.

But there are ways to reduce the cost.

Has your plot number been changed to a house number?

  • Eon have told me the plot number has been transferred to the correct address.

As for the mobile calling charges - thanks for that ;)
  • let British gas just take over as your supplier. after they have and all seems fine you can leave them to go back to eon or just stick with british gas.
  • Hi Fhmsparkle

As Joyful says, sounds like there's a mix-up with your details. I suspect this is what's causing BG to keep trying to take over your supply. They'll probably be trying to take over the supply at another property but, because of the mix up, keep coming back to you.

These mix-ups can sometimes happen, especially with new builds and particularly if the builder/developer has given us the wrong details for the property.

If you drop an email to the address in my Profile, I'll be happy to check this out for you.

Please let me know the Meter Serial Number (from the meter rather than from any paperwork), the complete postal address, the old plot number and any meter readings you may have, including up to date ones.

Also, if you know it, the Meter Point Reference Number. This is unique to your property and is used to identify your gas supply. It'll be on your paperwork and any gas bills we've sent.

After today, I'm not in again until next Tuesday so please don't worry if I don't reply straightaway. I'll pick up your email on my return.
