  • Have a nose on Pinterest and Etsy, the American LOVE candlewick (they call it chenille) and there are loads of patchwork quilts and cushion ideas on there.

On a different note, would candlewick dye? I have an old but decent quality blanket. It is the most vile bilious green imaginable. Think 60 /70s bad acid trip.
Am assuming it would have to be a similar shade or darker. I think it's cotton as cannot find any labels on it.

Yes mine are very 60/70s in colour one probably the same green as yours - a cross between jade and emerald green the other a fantastic tangerine orange

  • FEN1 If the blanket is cotton then it will dye easily in the washing machine. Dylon Machine Dyes come in a range of colours and some of the darker ones are lovely. They are very easy to use you just need the dye and some salt. The dye is for a certain weight of cloth per pack so you'd have to weigh the blanket and then see how many packets of dye you would need to work out if it is worth the outlay on dyes. The cheapest I have found are in Wilkins*ns so if you have one near it might be worth a look, Hope that's useful, Cheers Lyn xxx.

I've dyed heavy bath sheets very successfully by this method.
  • This made me smile my little man has autism and loves the feel of those covers he sits stroking it lol

Me too, thats why I wanted to do something with them rather than let then go. Also reminds me of my mum though she's gone for almost 35 years.

Don't leave them near me, as a kid I woukd pick the tufts out when I was stressed

lmao - me too! I don't think mum ever worked out why some of the bedspreads had bare patches!:)
  • When I was little my mum upcycled a damaged candlewick bedspread by making a dressing gown for me out of it. It was a salmon pink. I loved it, was so proud of it because it was original, cosy and none of my friends had one like it. I was heartbroken when I finally grew out of it.
She also sewed a pale pink woolen blanket into a very smart coat complete with lining and piping. I remember waiting at the bus stop with other children complaining of the cold, I never felt a thing in that coat!
Very clever my mum, I wish I'd paid more attention when she tried to teach me!
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

Another one who picked the tufts out lol! I too would mend it and dye it, then look at making something with it, a nice housecoat sounds great, but I have to say I would just use it as a throw.

  • I would treasure it and try to repair the damage if you can then use it as a 'cosy' istead of putting on the heating when the nights get a bit chilly.nothing nicer than a candlewick spread wrapped around your knees on a chilly night. One of my DGS Henry (12) has an old one that he just won't part with and he uses it as a wrap when he's watching t.v. or after he's dried off after a shower. He is very attached to his old holey spread bless him :):):)
  • I used to pick out the tufts too. Finally admitted it at a family party last year.....Mum always wondered which one of us was responsible.
