What would you do with old candlewick bedcovers?

I've been clearing out and have found a couple of old candlewick bedcovers.
I wouldn't want to put them to the charity shop as they are torn in a couple of places.
I do have a sewing machine but am not an expert by any means.
I did think about trying to make a kaftan type house coat but thought I would ask the OS experts first.
Any ideas anyone?

Put them on the bed, i used to love mine, growing up, always felt snuggly and warm. We lived in an old stone cottage with no heating upstairs..today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

same as you, something to keep you warm
or cushion covers, throws, a rug, wall hanging, door curtain, draught excluder.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
They would make nice soft cushion covers.
If you want to get rid of them, a dog shelter can use them as bedding.0 -
There are a number of free patterns on line eg http://www.connectingthreads.com/patterns/Kimono_Robe_Pattern_Download__D991495.html
My only concerns would be the weight when you are wearing it and the possibility of uneven hems.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
We have a Dogs Trust not far from where i live. If you don't want to take them to a charity shop or recycle them, the poor dogs are always asking for covers.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Is there enough undamaged cover in each one to trim them and use them as an extra throw across the foot of the bed? My feet are always cold in bed in the winter and an extra layer helps with that. If they are cotton you can machine dye them a darker colour to freshen them up if you like the idea. You could be very trendy too and use the smaller undamaged pieces to make matching hot water bottle covers, tres chic, non? Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Don't leave them near me, as a kid I woukd pick the tufts out when I was stressedPlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

The charity shop will recycle by weight any torn or damaged fabric items, so no worries there.
If they are repairable, have you seen the prices candlewicks go for on the bay?
Making an extra foot warmer for the foot end of the bed is a fantastic idea, Lyn. I'd also make a sofa throw for snuggling up inside on chilly nights, so cosy.... there is something so very welcoming about candlewick.
Have fun deciding!“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
On a different note, would candlewick dye? I have an old but decent quality blanket. It is the most vile bilious green imaginable. Think 60 /70s bad acid trip.
Am assuming it would have to be a similar shade or darker. I think it's cotton as cannot find any labels on it.0 -
Wow, I knew you OS'rs would come up with some great ideas
Cornishchick – Lovely idea but I did try that, being a woman of a certain age I found it just too hot - at times I can barely stand the duvet :rotfl:
Taff – really liking the idea of a wall hanging, I’ve got loads of other small bits of material so could make a collage type design – will check the price of doweling/broom handles to see how cheaply I can make it. Door curtains was also something I had thought about
Luxor4t – that looks nice – the covers aren’t really heavy duty ones but I have a towelling robe on its last legs (well-worn and the towelling disappearing in places) thought I would take it apart and use as a pattern for making one and as I would only be wearing it indoors nobody is going to see whether it has uneven hems - which is most likely with my sewing
MrsLurcherwalker – They are the “ripple effect” type so not sure if they would take on a dye too well but it may be an idea to try – but then again I have always been partial to a tie-dye type of pattern.
Serendipitious – Good lord just checked whats on eb@y, who knew - I’ve got Vintage Candlewick Covers!! – may look for someone who can do some invisible mending.
Thanks All some great ideas – not that I’m forgetting the dogs, but they can have them when I’ve completely finished with them.Jan - May Grocery spends = £432.47
