How to improve my non-existent credit rating

I am unsure how to improve my credit rating. I have never had a credit card or loan, and to top it off, I have been on the electoral roll for only 3 months due to living abroad (I am British born and citizen). I have a current account with Natwest and a direct debit set up and now live at home so have no utilities in my name.
I've had a look at the "credit cards for bad credit" page on here but when I go to apply, it asks for previous address and a non UK address cannot be in put.

Wait until 6 months have passed on the electoral roll and apply for one of the crappy credit cards.
Use it wisely. Buy the weekly shop and pay it off in full well before the due date.
Never leave a balance on it. Dont use it to get something now and pay later.
If your rejected dont rush out and apply for another card. Wait another 6 months if you can.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
How long have you been back in the UK?
What account do you have with natwest? a basic account or a regular current account? Does it have an overdraft facility?
You say you have a DD set up - is this for anything that would appear on you credit file (a credit agreement or phone contract or similar?)
Are you employed? does your salary get paid in to your natwest account? it might be worthwhile asking natwest whether you would be eligible for a credit card with them (either now or after a few months).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
I had a similar problem where I failed a credit check for a phone. After asking people for advice I applied for a credit card in person at the bank where I have my account after explaining my situation. I then applied for a sim only deal instead (which needed a credit check as well). I make sure I always pay the credit bill in full by direct debit by the end of the month and only use it to pay for basic items. Hope this helps.0

Wouldnt worry about a non existent 'credit rating'. I have had loads of credit card accounts, an HP agreement, two mobile contracts and a couple of bank accounts recorded on my credit file over the past 12 years...and I don't have a 'credit rating' either (nobody does).0
