Sanding/Varnishing Floor Boards in Kitchen

Hi
Please help.
We have done our kitchen up temporarily. This means the flooring hasn't been done. For the last 3 years we've had the floorboards showing and it doesn't look pretty now. We are still not in a position to get permanent flooring done but with a baby crawling around we really need to do something. The problem is the kitchen is huge. It is 300 sq ft.
We think giving it a light sand and a strong hardwearing varnish could be the short term solution. We aren't looking forward to the mess especially as we have five kids, some of whom are homeschooled, so there's lots of books, toys etc etc being stored (think Ikea style). We intend to add a sofa and coffee table too as we have the space.
Is this the way to go? Long term we are thinking of getting Amtico tiles, but that's when we do the kitchen up - maybe in a couple of years.
Thanks in advance

Just discussing vinyl tiles which seems a cheapish option and easier?0

not sure as your kitchen is a tad (!!) bigger than ours, but if you can take up the wooden floor - you'd be walking on the subfloor for a few days - it can be sent away to be sanded off site, which is what we are doing.
Then ours is being relaid and oiled, which is a lot easier to live with than a sander.
We had to do this as our flat is up 55 stairs so no go on sanders! But may not work if you can't get up your wood floor obviously.
PS did look at vinyl flooring recently in a specialist wood and flooring shop and they do some really nice ones now, they look far more like 'wood' than they used to.0 -
There's nothing under the floorboards (!) so I guess this is the sub-floor? I mean there's insulation underneath. It's not an option to take the flooring out.. thanks for the tip though

Visit your local scrapstore and see if they have the office carpet tiles there. They are suually cheap and cheerful and will last until you can afford something else.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
