Dental treatment costs for pensioner

Can anyone tell me if a pensioner can get free dental treatment and if yes how they go about it.

I have just found out a relative has been going to dentist and has been having to pay for his treatment.

He is a pensioner and his only income is his state pension. He is based in Scotland if that makes any difference

Its not cosmetic work that he is having done but essential basic dental treatment.

Is there any way he can reclaim previous invoices.

If he is only receiving his state pension he may be eligible for Pension Credit.

Pension Credit can be backdated for 3 months.

I remember my mum getting a leaflet about health costs (but can't find it now) when she received Pension Credit. Perhaps there is something there about reclaiming costs.

    Hopefully someone else will know.
  • Pensioners don't get automatic free dental treatment. If they are on a qualifying benefit eg guaranteed pension credit then they get free treatment or if they are on a low income with little savings then they may qualify for help with dental costs you can pick up a hc1 form to apply for help from chemists, doctors, dentists etc.

If they are currently undergoing a course of treatment when they apply for help then they need to keep hold of receipts and can claim back any money paid if they are entitled to help, otherwise I do not think you can reclaim money paid in the past.
  • Find out if he is a Private Patient or NHS
    If Private then he pays.
