Digitising video via firewire..

OK heres the story.

I have a digital8 sony camcorder. This was an upgrade of the older 8mm system which recorded digitially onto high grade 8mm tape.

Its old technology now of course.

The model no is DCR TRV110

It has a firewire digital output port.

My plan is to capture all the tapes i have and either store them on an external NAS which i have or burn them to DVD.

Clearly an hours worth of digital video wont fit on a DVD so there will have to be some software compression ??

Anyway my problem is that when using windows movie maker for example in XP pro on my desktop, when i browse for where i want to save the file to, the NAS isnt visible as an option in the windows menu. It shows just the native points i.e my computer and any USB storage devices. The NAS of course is LAN via the router.

I need an easy solution to capture the video and dump it onto DVDs as efficiently as possible.

Has anyone got any ideas before i spend money ?

Thanks all

  • Have you mapped a drive on the NAS or were you expecting to see it under Networks

Ah..now this is something ive thought about and as you suggest, i think it has some bearing on the matter. At the moment, i can view the shares on the NAS via "my network places". If i followed the mapping procedure, i wonder if it would then appear in the "save to" routine?

save it to c, then copy it

suggest your burn a few copies, and keep the iso images

if the nas has a usb port, it will move faster

  • Not sure i have enough space on "c" to hold 1 hours worth of digitised video. That kind of file size is hard to shove around. My ideal solution would be some kind of burn direct to DVD solution or create a comressed file which could then be burned to DVD. My storage medium is the buffalo linkstation NAS this model

It has two USB ports but i am pretty certain these are only for attaching further storage and not for directly accessing the drive via usb with a pc..

  • I have now read how to map a network folder on the NAS,done it and so i will see if that works..! TA

depending on quality, an hour may use about 13GB, it's possible a mapped networked drive may not be able to keep up

Just viewing windows movie maker under xp pro..in the temporary storage setup it allows me to browse and use the NAS share but in the save movie to it only allows local storage...blah..

Presumably the temp storage is what i capture and the locally stored movie is the end edited product so i might be ok..
