My children know not to go in the cupboard, likewise not to stick your head in a cooker or grab a pan of scalding water.

Whenever they went near the cupboard as a tot I would say no, and they have not had the slightest interest in the cupboard since. Equally they would not be daft enough to put them in their mouth, and that goes right from toddler hood.

Every child will learn right from wrong if it is taught to them. If they are of a type that they can't be trusted with any dangerous item then surely the parent would put it in a locked cupboard or up high.

Couldn't agree more. This is more a case of children not being taught where they can and can't go. And if not taught then a lack of supervision.

With little children its not what you say its how you say it I found.

One scowl and a growl from me was usually more than enough to send my kids running.

You still have to be sensible though.

Tbh Im kind of the same now why would anyone actally use them all time.

I used them when i first moved out because I didn't really no how a washing machine worked...and you just popped one in and was so easy.

Now though, I use powder, buy a big box and it lasts forever.... cost wise its got to be something like 5+ boxes of tabs to 1 box of powder easy?

I suppose if I had the cash to waste Id prefer them.... :D

Thanks to all who have replied.

I am also very much of the opinion that this is a parenting issue - not a packaging issue. I tried to keep that out of the OP, but I'm not sure how well I succeeded!

I think the BBC article also flags up the parenting aspect of this problem - without openly questioning the tales put forward by the affected parent. That said, I'm still wondering how the 15 month-old reached the shelf.

From the moneysaving point of view, it seems a shame that part of Glasgow's health budget has to be spent on saving children from their own parents' stupidity.

And I still don't think liquitabs are that economical - not compared to the big boxes of washing powder, bought when on special offer!

Thanks again to all who took time to contribute.
  • I use liquitabs for convenience... prefer them every time.

I have a stockpile of them from the last time Ocado had them on special offer... only another 18 boxes to go!

Alas, Ocado still don't deliver to my postcode area.

So - whatever their offers on detergents - Ocado cannot currently contribute to my moneysaving. :)

    Lucky you, however!

They're banging on about how much they look like sweets on the telly right now. My son's never seen a sweet in his life. They look inviting, sure, but so does everything when you're one. Lock them away. Problem solved. No need for a design change. Jeez.

I use liquitabs, I wash at low temps and powder doesn't seem to dissolve. And liquid from a bottle - well I end up putting too much in so it costs me more anyway. Have you seen the size of the liquitabs? My kids are 3 and 4 I think they would struggle to squeeze them in. More likely to burst them and get in the eye or something.

My laundry stuff is on the top shelf of the cupboard over the sink. The rest of my cleaning stuff is on a high shelf above the coat cupboard. Under my sink lives pegs, flasks etc.

I've never known my littlies go in that cupboard anyway. One of my lower cupboards is for plastics, so little tubs, kids plates and cups etc. But then I don't keep sharp knives in the cutlery drawer either.

Most of us with littlies keep a close eye on them and keep high-risk things out of sight / reach.

I've just seen this on the national news - do we really need telling these items are dangerous to children?
