    Hi Juls,

My dad was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and I work in a T&O department in a hospital so my advice is, take Glucosamine and Chondroitin every day, dont buy the cheap tablets you can get for a couple of quid, you need to spend a fair bit on these to get decent quality ones, holland and barret are good you can stock up when they have a sale. For pain relief Ibuprofen is best (as long as your ok taking it) as it acts as an anti-inflammatory.

If the pain gets really bad you can ask to be referred to an orthopaedic consultant who may give you injections or another simple procedure depending on where the osteoarthritis is.

    Hope this helps.

Nearly everyone in the UK has insufficient Vitamin D status.
The body requires between 3000 and 5000iu daily.
Taking an effective dose to obtain optimal status is absolutely risk free.
Raising Vitamin D status by regular(every day if possible), limited (20-40minutes in UK), full body (those bits least tanned are most effective at making Vitamin D) sun exposure when the ratio of UVB<>UVA is optimal (midday) also initiates the mechanism that protects you from skin cancer.Sunlight may be needed to prime T cells to function in skin As having optimal vitamin d status also reduces cancer incidence by 77% it is a measure we should all be adopting asp.

Edit: The amount of Vitamin D3 needed to achieve optimum status cannot possibly be achieved from diet alone. Between April and September it is technically possible, (if you are prepared to bare all) to obtain sufficient from sunshine at this latitude but not from October to March. Bear in mind in Omaha outdoor workers averaged 2,800iu/d They are latitude 42 we are 52 where the sun is weaker and there are fewer days available for sunbathing. Milk in the USA is also fortified there (not here) and that probably accounts for 200iu/d. Many of the projections you see about how much Vitamin d can be obtained from sunshine while wearing normal clothing are simply unrealistic, hence the high rate of Vitamin d insufficiency.
Nobody makes any money out of sunshine so no one promotes it. Sufficient Vit d3 to last one person 2 Winters can be obtained for £13. because it is so cheap and isn't patentable nobody can make a fortune from it hence the reason nobody promotes it.

Further Edit in reply to #9 as I don't want to take this thread off topic. This paper explains the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines in osteoarthritis. Vitamin d, or rather the product metabolised from D3, is responsible for controlling these macrophages, so insufficient Vit d means the regulation, turning on turning off, of the immune sytem, cannot function fully as nature intended This paper shows you need 100nmol/L for all systems to function properly. Using 75nmol/L as a marker of insufficiency then most uk people don't have sufficient If you had clicked the first link in this message you would have seen some of the research showing the connection.

Lots of information here, go googling there's loads of information but be warned it's all confusing:rolleyes: :D

I have tried Glucosamine found it no good, recently tried rosehip stuff from Boots found that no good either, sorry to sound so gloomy but wish you the best anyway.

I'm taking glucosamine, don't know if it's working or not but it's not worth stopping it to find out ! Both my GP and Physiotherapist suggested it to me and both also stressed the importance of exercise such as swimming to maintain mobility. Artificial vitamins shouldn't be necessary if your diet is well balanced and health. Use your common sense about any complementary stuff and remember the manufacturers are in it to make a profit, not for the good of your health.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Perhaps if you let us know where the arthritis is some of us could give you hints & tips on how to best manage some things.

My arthritis affects my fingers & hands the most & one piece of good advice I was given by the OT department was to always use a bone china cup or mug, as it's lighter than pottery, with a handle large enough for at least 3 fingers. Apparently the more joints used when holding something makes for less stress & wear than using fewer would.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I can't see where this has to do with osteoarthritis, i'm not being funny, just interested to know more as I will try anything to keep my knees going a bit longer.

    Thanks

arthritis care run great courses on living with arthritis- both osteo and rhuematoid

I know they hold them all over scotland- 6 weeks where you get to network. they are run by trained people who have it themselves and are a good way to find out about coping techniques.

I have o/a in both knees and according to my consultant am too young - not very helpful!

Glucosamine AND chondratin are excellent, you need to take both together so that you encourage your body ti take it up. Cod liver oil and star flower oil has it has lots more omega 3's in than just cod liver oil alone, and ginger in tablet form to help with the inflammation.

When its really bad then accupuncture helps enormously for pain relief.

Gentle excercise and building up the muscles to compensate for the joint are the only other things you can do to help yourself.
