Littlewoods Sofabed Quandary

I purchased a sofa bed from Littlewoods 2 months ago, and recently noticed with horror that as we have to move the sofa bed away from the wall to put in bed mode that the rear legs look near to collapse. The problem doesn’t actually appear to be the legs themselves, but the strength of the wood/resin material that they are screwed into which will probably fail completely with continued use. We have to make sure that there are 2 of us around to lift it into position now as the legs collapse if moved one side at a time or if dragged.
After complaining to Littlewoods (who state that it is too late to return the item) and telling them that I just want a fully usable sofa bed that wont collapse, they have sent this reply:

Thank you for your communication regarding TO621
It is our company policy to have all furniture inspected by a Qualified Upholsterer to ascertain if there is a manufacturing fault.
If the Inspector advises us that it is not a manufacturing fault there may be a charge of 45.00 debited to your account to cover any costs we have incurred offering this service.
Please contact the Upholstery Department on 0844 8224682, to confirm your wishes to go ahead with this inspection.”

This seems a bit dodgy by threatening to add charges especially when the Inspector is in house. Is this good customer service, or more to the point is it legal?
I’ll go for the inspection, but am afraid that as it is not independent that it will not be accurate.
Any advice on how to proceed would be most welcome.

Probably not the way to go. But i would make sure they cannot take payment from the bank or cards etc.

Then find a freephone number is one exists. Get them to send the inspector out. If they dont find in your favour i would refuse to pay.

Put the account into dispute right away. Pay for other items except this one unless you have already paid.

You may need to get your own inspection done if it gets this far.
