clean Experian file but constantly denied credit?

I recently applied for a bank account, and they told me they only search Experian. I checked my Experian a few days ago and it was fair with no negative factors, and 2 positive. Yet I got a blunt email a few days later claiming they do not wish to open an account for me?

Now I heard rumours that there is a secret credit file the banks check, could this be true? why the hell would they deny me a basic account?

They use a variety of information of which the credit file is just a part.

Do you have past history with that bank, or with another one from its group?
  • great so they can record you secretly as a fraudster, without a trial? sounds like utter contempt for the laws we have

How do I get my info from CIFAS

If you applied for a BASIC account, then you wouldn't have been credit checked at all.

If you applied for a FULL current account, you will be credit checked.

There is no 'secret' file, this is nonsense. However each financial institution has its own criteria and perhaps you just didn't meet what they are after at this moment in time.

Banks' internal credit scoring systems are regularly tweaked depending on the types of clients they want to attract.

Do you work? Do you have your salary mandated to the bank? Would you be switching DDs and SOs to them? Did you request any borrowing? Was it a joint application? Do these questions apply to the joint party, if it was? Are you on the voters roll? Have you applied for lots of other credit recently? Alternatively do you have zero credit history?

All of these things, and many more, are taken into account in an internal credit scoring assessment and so could have an impact.

I have been unable to open even a basic account, for around 4 years now, as if I am some major fraudster..I have never been bankrupt, had a criminal conviction or anything...

My Experian file is clean, Equifax has one default about the drop-off, and Call credit can't find my info (checked now)

If there was a CIFAS issue then it should appear on your experian and equifax credit files, so it would not be hidden from you. But to check for certain you can do a £10 subject access request to CIFAS to find out what information they hold on you.

Presumably you have applied to, and been declined by, several different banking groups?

  • Basic accounts DO credit check you - it's mainly for ID purposes though.

They do an ID check - not a credit search.
