immersion heater not working correctly

My immersion heater has always over heated the water .I recently contacted an electrician as asked him to fit a thermostat.
Sparky contacted a plumber and the two off them went to work on my hot water tank .From what I gather they drained the tank (broke a pipe )fitted t thermostat and went . Now heres the problem . The immersion didnt heat the water .So sparky came back and turned up the thermostat ,the water is as hot as before he started but it only heats 1/3 off the tank .Sparky says I need a plumber to fit a balancer ?. And ideas how I fix this .I am reluctant to let sparky or his mate back

What type of thermostat was fitted? Integral to the element or external somewhere else on the tank?

Is the immersion heater element nearer the top or bottom of the tank?

the thermostat appears to be integrated to the element and is near the top off the tank

Is the immersion heater the sole means of heating your water? You don't have a boiler as well?

Under the cap of the immersion heater element, there will be a small screw which controls the immersion heater thermostat temperature.

Make sure you isolate the electricity supply to the immersion heater before opening the cover and making any adjustments.

I have a boiler (oil) that also heats the water ,and I know there is a screw under the cap (I haven't adjusted it ) but why is it not heating the full tank .At the moment its no good to take a bath .

The electric immersion on the top of the tank is not supposed to heat a full tank. It only heats the top third or so.

You can open it up and turn it down to 50 degrees. It's supposed to only be used as an emergency backup to your oil boiler.

The coil that is connected to the boiler heats the whole cylinder.

An immersion heater at the top of the tank will heat the water at the top which is what you use first. Cold water enters the tank from the bottom and hot water is taken from the top. Generally, immersion heaters lower down in the tank are for economy 7 heating where you heat a full tank of water.

Did your plumber check that the thermostat for the boiler and zone valves were operating correctly?

A combination of the boiler heating the water and your immersion heater may result in very hot water.

What setting is the dial/screw at?

sorry but that makes no sense .I mean I have always been able to heat a full tank off water ,and I have lived in other house that have had oil and always been able to heat a full tank off water using an immersion heater .All they have supposedly done is fit a thermostat . The oil in also linked to the central heating so I wouldnt want to put the heat on just to get a bath .

As HappyMJ said, the immersion heater is generally only for emergency use and you should be using the gas boiler to heat the water in the tank. Besides, gas will be much cheaper to heat the whole tank!

As to why your previous immersion heater heated a full tank and this one doesn't - it could be a number of things: How many elements were there? Was the water in the tank solely heated using an immersion heater without the boiler when you heated a full tank? Power rating of the element? Length of element?

The existing immersion heater element will eventually heat a full tank of water but the time taken will depend on the type of element, whether it is covered in scale, lagging on your tank and whether hot water is being drawn while the element is heating the water.
