If you're looking for a flat, it will be leasehold. What were you thinking you could get if not leasehold? A house?!
(No hope and Bob Hope spring to mind!)

As others have said - Reading is expensive because it is a commuter town for London and has several large tech companies in nearby parks. I cant see Reading house prices falling and £120 - £140k will only get you a tiny flat in the worst areas.
Personally, I'm looking to move to Basingstoke where the same houses in same types of areas are £40k cheaper than Reading.0 -
Bracknell is cheaper - but we all know why....."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Reading is way too expensive, maybe the only way to look at it, is borrow as much as you can even if its more than you'd like and then later on when you can move somewhere cheaper and pay that extra loan off. It's not really much cheaper in bracknell or basingstoke as far as I can see, especially if you factor in travel costs if you work in Reading.0

Why? The crime rate is actually worse in Reading. The only downside to Bracknell is that it's full of annoying roundabouts and the shopping centre is rubbish (although it is in the process of being improved).0 -

Basingstoke or Camberley/Farnborough are good bets for cheaper houses. Personally I think Basingstoke makes Reading look posh by comparison, but............0 -
The trouble with it being an expensive area is that for the majority of us on low-average wages, the prices appear even higher! It's ok if you work at one of these IT companies and earn £40-50k but when you are stuck on £20k it's not easy.0

It depends on what you do!! and remember that a lot of the IT companies are rationalising ie making people redundant. HP have made swathing cuts as have some of the others. IT companies are now leaner than they have ever been!0 -

It's never easy when you are on £20k, but it's even worse when the local average salary is closer to £30-32k.All I can suggest is to move abroad - or up north somewhere.
