Hi, I have been contacted by someone from abroad who has asked me to help him find out his family tree but don't know where to start! Is there a cheap easy way of doing this? I have googled on the net, but all sites seem to involve paying subscriptions etc. Even genesreunited which I thought was free charge a tenner. As it's not related to me, I'm not that interested, just wanted to help.

You can usually get free trials for ancestry but a relative abroad could do this anyway. THe best way if the research is local is to go to the family records office. THere are lots of records online that are free but they are usually incomplete and it takes an age to find what you want - and even then you are not sure if it is what you actually want when you get it.0

There's a load of Genelogy sites that are free.... you just need to search for them. I found loads of sites before for a friend of my dad, but have lost the email that had all the links

One tip is if you're researching a particular area, maybe look up more info on the area and see if you can get local history from Unis, Libraries and maybe parishes.0 -

Find your local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They have a fantastic setup for geneaology. The people who work in the centre are friendly and very very experienced at helping you get started. There is no pressure to join the Church! And its for free!
