Will diesel be massively more expensive than petrol?

OP, take note..... A lot of people mindlessly go out and buy diesels, an awful lot of people then end up complaining that they didn't know it needed decent mileage and specific conditions to keep the DPF from failing.
I used to be a petrol head! That is until I bought a new model 2.0 Astra diesel. With modern high performance turbos there is no difference in total power output. I fell in love with diesel simply because of the low range power output. I fell foul of the filter problem - but a 5 mile run at 3000rpm on the motorway soon had it working again. Now I have gone for a new Freelander 2. Lovely vehicle and provided that you use it correctly it will give years and years of trouble free motoring. I use it every day and cover about 200 miles a week, 70% doing the 6 mile round trip thing and 30% motorway use where I can open her up - 80mph - 2500rpm.
It's all a choice thing but personally I would never have another petrol engine. Will be looking at the new Discovery 4 in about 3 years which has a 3.0 twin turbo plant. Borrowed a demo one (XS) last week what a fabulous vehicle.0 -
It might be tempting to get an auto diesel since there is more availability than an auto petrol but with short journeys like that there will no doubt be problems down the line. The engine won't have enough time to warm up, it needs a good run at higher speeds for that.
See what you can find on Autotrader in a 40 or 60 mile radius or however far you're prepared to travel.0 -

Diesel is only 5p per litre more than petrol where I live at the moment (142.9 p/L vs 137.9 p/L, so diesel is 3.6% more).0 -
Sorry should have said the journeys are about 6 miles per day in the week and every other weekend slightly longer journey of 10 / 20 miles. So all local driving really.
This is hopeless for a modern diesel which thrives on being used.
With 6 miles a day the engine will never be warm enough.
Even 20 miles is not enough to re-generate the DPF.
The EGR will clog up with syrupy, sooty crud and the DPF will need to be renewed well before time.
Please get a petrol engined car, otherwise you'll be back here in a year or so saying diesels are rubbish.0 -
Thank you for all the replies - I've learned loads!!
I think realistically it has to be a petrol - so I might have to ditch the Hyundai as 99% of available models are diesel!!
I'll keep looking

With A diesel if you set the mileage range, you see that the first mile uses 6 miles of diesel.
Once you are up and running, they are slightly more economical.
However the days were they "RAN FOR EVER" are well over, the start to drop apart around 100kBe happy...;)0 -

This is incorrect. A brief glance at the Hyundai website will show you lots of petrol models throughout their range.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -

The OP is after an auto, a lot of i30 autos are diesel, A quick nationwide search on Autotrader for up to 2 year old auto i30s reveals 21 petrol and 98 diesel models. Narrow it down to high spec ones and there's even less auto petrols about.0 -

Sorry - I hadn't hoisted in that the OP was looking for a used car. There are I30 automatic petrol models available new with high specification for the price. Mine has all of the gongs and whistles I would expect for a sub £20K car.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
Not sure on the Hyundai, but there seems to be a fair few petrol auto Astras around at the moment.0
