Multiple tabs opening when doing a google search

For the last couple of days, whenever I use google to do a search, in stead of displaying results multiple google tabs start opening (IE8, Windows XP)

I have done a full scan with malwarebytes with no result
I have also tried 'reset advanced settings' in tools also with no result
Colleagues are experiencing the same proplem on their PCs as well

Any help gratefully appreciated
Thank you

We don't have one. Nothing has been changed.
And this is happening on pcs on two separate networks.

    An update:

It would appear to be a bigger problem than just our site as we were advised by the county council broadband team that this problem appears to be affecting all schools in the county, not just ours.
The problem has been raised with Google and we have all been advised to use an alternative search engine until the issue is resolved.
    Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
