I suppose he is best hanging onto them for a while then as he has lost so much anyway.
My OH received "investment advice" from HSBC shortly before we met and lost a few thousand pounds in a matter of less than a year so I wasn't surprised when he mentioned it was HSBC.
Ah well, you live and learn!
I did get him a great rate on his mortgage a few years back (0.19 + base rate) so I suppose it is swings and roundabouts:p
