Ryan Air credit card is a con

The Ryan Air credit card promises free flights but you pay for the taxes and other charges. So that's fine you may think and looking online at the flight prices gives you an indication of these costs which seems reasonable...BUT NO... Ryan Air give you a special voucher number and then you call a special costly number whereby they then tell you the cost of the flight charges. The so called free flight actually costs more than what you could buy it on line for on the normal website.
I wrote a letter to Ryan Air about this and surprise surprise got no reply. I will now write to Bank Santander as I bet they are not aware of this scam by Ryan Air.
How do Ryan Air get away with this!!!!
For example flights online for 2 persons return worked out at just under £190 all in. The taxes in these flights was under £60. Therefore I expected to pay around this figure. But oh no the 'special price' was around £200!!!!

Has anyone else encountered this? I was only trying to go from Bournemouth to Malaga in October or November!

Yours very shocked and misled I could have benefitted from another credit card and so am now financially worse off!!

    I bet they are.
  • Are there any airlines CC schemes where you don't have to pay the taxes? I thought this was the norm.

You're missing the point. The scheme cannot be used to part-pay for fares offered to the public, but only against much higher fares. Thus the cash cost of buying a flight using credit from the scheme as well is at least as high as just buying a flight in the ordinary way.

I'm not missing the point at all. The terms of the offer are spelled out clearly when you take out the card, just as they are with BA, BMI etc. If you look at the cost of redeeming Avios against a long haul flight, you will see exactly the same thing - it costs as much, if not more, than buying a normal ticket.

The fact that all this is in the terms doesn't stop this being a con.

The fact the 'offer' contains the word "Ryanair", should raise caution with anyone

Agreed. I certainly recall this being the case when I had my free BMI flight, and the same applies if you use air miles for a flight too.

Not always, you just have to be aware of your options...

I guess most people are members of the Ba Exec Club so you should familiarise yourself with the Reward Flight Saver scheme - you can get to zones 1-3 (UK as far as Moscow) for capped 'taxes' of £17.50/£22.50 each way for economy/business.

You are correct that, in general, long haul economy redemptions aren't worth it but you can use points to get a business class flight for less than you would normally pay for an economy ticket. Alternatively you can use points to upgrade a economy/premium economy ticket.

If you use your points with American Airlines (a BA partner in the One World alliance) then you can effectively fly to the states without paying taxes.

To the OP though, what do you expect from RyanAir? They are the only company I can think of that actually seem to delight in the fact they treat customers like !!!!. At least the others pretend to value your custom! I would rather crawl on my hands and knees on broken glass to my destination...
