price of apples and what supermarket is best

  • Tesco has New Season apple £1 per bag right now, it's got 5 big apples, sweet and juicy but doesn't keep long as it's already very ripe.
  • I would say Aldi's gala apples are the best tasting by far, next would be Sainsburys. Tescos gala apples are dire, they are usually dry, and have virtually no taste or juice.

Probably the majority of English apples go straight into cold store, be they organic or not. Otherwise for some varieties they'd all be gone in four weeks.

Yes the Tesco Goodness organic apples are £1 for 6 which is very good since Sainsbury's are 5 for 2.50. However whereas the Sainsbury's ones are English, the Tesco website doesn't specify country of origin or even variety.

Riverford sells Class 2 organic UK apples 750g for 2.75 or 1.5kg for 5.25 variety as in season eg Autumn Greeting, Cox, Gala, Red Delicious.

Abel & Cole sells minimum Class 2 organic apples 1kg for 3.95 or 700g for 2.95. Varieties can include Charles Ross, Discovery, Jonagold, Red Pippin, Royal Gala and Topaz and country of origin will be UK, Argentina or New Zealand, according to season.

I just bought a huge carrier bag of apples for 50p from a house down the road. There are so many garden gate sellers around, why buy from a supermarket? :D

Look out for the value packs of apples, such as tesco, the value packs there today had apples of the "Cripps Pink" variety which is actually the variety of "Pink Lady" apples (Pink lady is just a brand name, cripps pink is the actual variety of apples) and they were priced at 80p a bag
I didn't know this, and with Pink Lady apples costing almost 80p each in my local Tesco I will definitely be trying 'Cripps' in future if I see them!

I dont like when supermarkets package apples so they you dont see the price per kg. 5 apples for £1 - is it a good deal? Impossible to say if we do not know the mass of the apples. Also I cannot hand pick the best ones and I end up with a bag of bruised apples.

Packaged apples are almost always smaller than the ones you can hand select.
