Anyone else noticed that apple prices have gone up quite sharply over the last few years?

And I have noticed Morrisons are best for apples. They sell Jonagold apples nice and cheap. Decent sized apple, tastes good.

Another thing as well - apples from New Zealand and South Africa are cheaper than UK apples. And most supermarkets dont even have UK apples.

Also, although I really like Aldi and Lidl for many products, apples are not one of them. Usually very small apples, in packs, bit disappointing.

  • Yes its amazing that such a simple food item costs so much .
Not only that but the flavour seems to have been bred out of a lot of varieties .
I dont know why apples are shipped from say NZ - you would think that UK grown apples would be preferrable and less costly to transport .
Hubby just got some fantastic apples 80p for a bag full from a farm shop . Thats okay if you live near somewhere like that . I told him next time he is driving past there to get some more and check what else they sell .
I dont think there is an easy solution unless you grow your own .

Apples are seasonal, so there are times of the year when we have none and NZ have loads because it's their season for apple, and vice versa.

By shipping apples from NZ when they have too many and we have none we ensure we can eat apples all the year round.

Doesnt explain way New Zealand apples are cheaper.

Also Asda havd a reall poor selection of apples thsse days.
  • Ill always buy british apples when in season as they are absolutly stunning (right now the dessert apples such as discovery which got a really nice pink running through the flesh of the apple and hints of strawberry are coming out and are everywhere for about £1 for a bag of 5-7 apples) New Zealand apples are usually pretty tasty (nice and crisp and juicy) when there are no UK apples around. I find South African apples really poor quality and not worth buying what-so-ever. Like with most things new zealand can probably produce the apples there much cheaper than we can over here. Look out for the value packs of apples, such as tesco, the value packs there today had apples of the "Cripps Pink" variety which is actually the variety of "Pink Lady" apples (Pink lady is just a brand name, cripps pink is the actual variety of apples) and they were priced at 80p a bag

Supply and demand, when you have more apples than demand for them you have to reduce the price to get rid of them. It's only Brits who are stupid enough to pay extra for home grown produce.
  • If you want really fresh apples at a good price, pick your own.

  • Tesco Organic Goodness Apples 6 Pack £1.00 @Tesco
Thanks to Rudess over on Hotukdeals, cant vouch if this Nationwide as its only been up an hour
Considering Apples are supposed to be the most pesticide ridden ever year on the Dirty dozen No 1;Organic should be a decent deal
  • I love Pink Lady but I thought they were all from NZ or SA. I didn't realise that you could get English ones. I have been on a mission to buy only English apples but can't find any in the supermarkets. We have grown some beautiful looking apples but they must all be bakers, soooo sour! It's ridiculous at this time of year that you buy apples and they look nice but are wooly and spongy to eat.

It's a bit early for most of this seasons English apples. They are harvesting Discovery -which I don't like-but Coxes, Worcesters and Russets-my favourites-probably aren't ready yet.

Morrisons have Discovery for £1.95 a kg just now.

Jonagold from Holland are £1.35 a kg though
