Googlemail - being told "quota exceeded" !!!

I have just received an email on my Google Email saying: "this is to let you know your Gmail Mailbox Quota limit has been exceeded. To continue using email you will need to upgrade quota......"
and giving a link to click on entitled "Validate".
This has got to be some sort of scam hasn't it?
I've certainly NOT exceeded as far as I can see....I've not got that many emails "stored" in my inbox (a lot less than I have had at some points in fact) and, as I understand, the Googlemail inbox is pretty darn big capacity....
I cant see this can be possible, but am suspecting that the sender wants me to believe them and click on the link given and then....whoops....!!!
The sending details are:
betberjn@boscustweb101.eig!!!!!!!!
Errr...who....just who the heck are they when they are at home?
Anyone else had this come up please?
EDIT: don't know why the exclamation marks came up...the rest of this is:
!!!!!!!! errrmm...try again with spaces:

100% SCAM, dont open any links. forward the email with headers to abuse@google.com0

Can you go to your email and print the whole header here so i can run a location checkAll the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0

Is that what you mean by "header"?
no, when you go into your gmail inbox open the email and on the right hand side next to the email date you will see an downward arrow, click this and it will show a sub menu and in that sub menu you will see 'show original' click this and it will display the whole email in text format.
the header is everything before

I took your suggestion to forward this onto "abuse" yesterday evening.
Went to follow your instructions re the header this morning and, when I clicked onto that email to find this, up came a red banner across the top of the email with the "Be careful with this message......" text in it. I've seen that banner a few times on my emails (usually ones in the spam folder) and thought "Thanks for the warning" and promptly deleted them.
First time I recall the banner being red or coming up "after the event" like that.
My response from the Googlemail abuse thing I sent to was a standard email back and pointing me to a help page.
I guess I was right then that this is indeed a scam and I need take no further action - other than just to delete the email???
(NB: I see the word "validate" link has changed on the email to that word is still there, but it doesn't look like a clickable link any more).0
