Macbook Pro Retina Ghosting issues - Apple wont do anything or acknowledge the issue!

Hi all, apologies for the rant but coming to the end of my tether with this one!!!

I have a MacBook pro retina 15inch (which cost me £1800) since Christmas last year and slowly over time the screen has displayed image retention (i.r) or ghosting. It has a LG screen and from reading forums on apple and the web this one is a major issue all over the world and in America there are lawsuits being made against them.

I first noticed it after a couple of weeks of using it and slowly over time it has got worse to the point I have to use my old pc for any design work (I am a graphic designer and bought this for using off site from my office)

I have called apple on 4-5 occasions and visited the apple store so the genius bar can take a look and perform tests. They have a test that is supposed to show if there is any issue with the screen but this is in no way replicating every day use. As thought they said it was fine and no issues were found.

On three occasions I have been sent emails to a website disclaimer by apple that image retention is part of retina screens traits (although most Samsung screens, ipads or 13 inch mac books do not have this problem) and that to stop this problem I should run a screensaver every few minutes or when it appears, how would I ever get any work done putting this on every 2-3 minutes when it shows up!? I would like to add that this information was only put on the apple site from early this year and I expect as a disclaimer to all the problems the 15inch mac books are having with the LG screens in like mine!

Today was the last straw so I called Apple care to discuss, after lengthy discussions I was told that even under the 12 month manufacturers warranty that I have they won't look at or replace the screen. Even with all the online evidence they seem to have been told to ignore this problem, the fact that in other cases screens have been replaced (although most within a 14 day period of purchase) they still won't acknowledge the problem and replace the screen on my faulty purchase.

I was told I had more chance of going to the company we purchased from, comet, who are unfortunately no longer, and trying to get them to replace under the consumer act!!? I could write a letter to Apple Customer Relations but it was doubtful anything would be done.

I asked the question if it was a faulty hard drive or memory would I be able to have the part replace under the warranty and they answered yes, so why not a faulty screen?

Basically I am livid that someone as big as apple has a problem so big and yet won't do anything about it even with all the mounting evidence against them.

I would appreciate if anyone has experienced similar with their MacBook retinas, or just in general if there is anything I can do about this, trading standards, consumer act or anything....

I have two months till the 12 month warranty is up and am not best pleased about having to pay out for a repair that could cost up to £700 if it can be done under the manufacturers warranty

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

If you paid by credit card, then you may be able to claim from the credit card company. Apple don't really owe you anything, legally

OP bought it from Comet. They have said "the number you dialled has not been recognised, please try again"

(There was a comment above asking where he bought it from, which has been deleted. So this one looks really odd now!)

  • Same happened to me, a few months ago I noticed image retention in normal use but the official test used by Apple didn't show anything and they weren't willing to replace.

Then about 4 weeks ago I noticed a stuck bright pixel and a slightly dimmer one close by. I wasn't able to do anything for a few weeks due to an international business trip. When I came back I noticed I now had 5 stuck pixels. So I took it back in and this was enough for them to replace the screen (although there was some suggestion the stuck pixels were somehow caused by external damage and that this was a on-off goodwill gesture).

So examine your screen (set a solid black background and turn up the brightness), it's possible you may also have a similar issue starting to occur and will be able to get a replacement fitted.
