My very sensible just turned 18 year old has asked me to help him sort out a credit card so that he can start to build up a good credit rating. He is 1 year into a paid 4 year apprenticeship, so does have an income, although it is low. Does anyone have any reccommendations as to which card would be best to apply for that is likely to accept him? He isn't looking for a high limit or any deals, just a card he can use a couple of times a month and pay off in full every statement.

Vanquis are the most likely to accept someone with no credit history at all. Also they ask for household income, so he can include yours, further increasing his chances of being accepted.0

This was my thought, too.
Vanquis, Cap1, Aqua etc are most likely to accept.
If he banks with Barclays, possibly Barclaycard Initial.

Hi,
Well im 18 living with parents and employed full time, I currently have an aqua card with a £250 limit and a scary 39.9% apr  I had a lloyds under 19s account which they won't and can't provide any credit services to (over draft credit card etc) so I needed to go into my lloyds branch and they upgraded my account to a standard adult account. After about two weeks I had a banner on my online banking to apply for a lloyds platinum credit card so I did and got accepted
they gave me a £1750 credit limit and 13 months 0% on purchases and an apr of 21.95%
I think he is best going into lloyds and talking to someone there who can look into getting him a credit card as the branches can manipulate the system more in his favour.
Hope this helps

For what it's worth I was given the Barclaycard Initial as a first card with no history beyond phone bills without banking with them.. They've upgraded it to a reasonable rewards card after less than a year too which is handy.
Personally I'd ask Lloyds informally + try the barclaycard prechecker tool.0
