My DMF has been making a rattling noice for a while , now its doing it on start up and shut down - sounds like a metal knocking togther, i did notice this to when i go over a pot hole of speed bump (same noice as on shut down/start uip) Also there is a squealing sound when pressing the acclerator and ching gear - coming off clutch.

This has been going on for the last 6000 miles, just wondering does this mean it is shot and needs replacing? or what does happen when it does 'go'?

They rarely fail and leave you stranded, What they will do is kill the starter motor and cause damage to the shaft and housing.

My sister delayed changing hers and it cost more in the long run. Killed 3 starter motors.
