Toilet filling up all the time

Not literally to the brim but, say, every 3rd flush our toilet continues a mild flow of water. And even when it has stopped, it can begin again of it's own accord when I run a tap. Finally, it can be fixed by a) pressing the flush button but it feels like fresh air ie. no resistance at all and b) stamping one's foot heavily on the floor, my kids sussed this one out.

Anything obvious? Easy fix? Please don't get too technical, thanks.

    Hi there,

You didn't state but I have one of these: Dudley Vantage Cistern, which is prone to scale build up around the base of the flush mechanism (inside the cistern) in my case this was the cause of the problem you describe. No guarantee yours isn't another problem of course!

If you have something similar (or not) you should be able to 'service' the unit easily - googling my particular cistern is how I figured out what needed doing. Isolate the cistern (so the water doesn't flow in to the unit) first. The whole process took 30 mins in my case (cleaned all the scale out) and job's a goodun and no DIY/plumbing skills needed.

:) I'm gonna hazard a guess that inside the cistern its like this>>>

in which case its either the flap valve, the black bit in pic, is jamming, or chain is ;)

Take top of cistern and watch what happens and where it catches, or if anything may be stuck under the flap :)
