Direct Lines Named Driver NCB

Hi,

I was named on my father’s insurance policy as a named driver in Jan 2013.

Firstly, will that mean by Jan 2014 I will have 1 years NDNCB in addition to my previous policy held on my own name which expired in July 2011? I have a gap of insurance between July 2011 and Jan 2013 which is 15 months? A few insurance companies say if it’s less than 24 months without insurance it’s okay with a good reason.

Also, do direct line named drivers get automatically put onto the discount scheme rather than requesting it when setting up the policy? Do all named drivers get the discount, which can be used when they get their own policies on their own name?

Thanks.

  • the NDD (named driver discount) is only applicable to Direct line policies, i.e DL will apply the NDD as NCB if you get your own car and insure with DL quoting the policy number from where your a named driver.

NCB earned on your own are valid for three years from the end date of the last active policy. many wont considder NCB after this period and start you from scratch, so you dont have long left to get yourself insured on another policy on your own to keep the NCB active.

you cant transfur NDD to other insurers.

i found that DL was overly expensive to insure with in some cases even after earning 5 years NDD with them i couldnt afford £2k insurance on a renault megane with them, but CO-OP normal insurance gave me a full years cover (12 months not a 10 month booster) for £500 for the year so the NDD counted for nothing IMHO just a gimmick to keep you with them.

I thought NCD disappeared after 2 years, in which case the OP has zero.

As above NDD is just a marketing ploy and no other insurance co's will recognise it. Do not confuse it with NCD.

generally NCB lasts for two years but there are a couple of companies that stretch it to three.

I'd also say that the two/three year NCB clock will run from when your last policy ended (july 2011) to when your next policy starts. I'm pretty sure being a named driver on dad's policy isn't enough to reset the clock although it might well be worth asking DL to see what they can offer.
