Mattress topper and electric blanket.

Not sure if this is the right place. But don't know where else to put it.
In an effort to save money in heating I want to get an electric blanket to put on instead of a heater in my room. But I have a mattress topper. Not memory foam. Basically like a really think duvet.
Does anyone know if its safe to use an electric blanket with these? Or if I'd be better getting a heated over blanket?
Thanks for any advice.

Personally, I would always rather have a heated overblanket than an underblanket. Lying on wires can be uncomfortable and they never cover the whole bed like an overblanket does.
However, it's finding a decent overblanket because I have had one which kept going into a lock out state and had to be reset in order to get it working again. But on one occasion it just refused to reset and has not worked since. So ATM I'm back using an underblanket which I dislike. It is fairly padded so the wires are not a problem but it still doesn't cover the whole bed, leaving cold bits.
Just checked and the overblanket is Dreamland (Imetec), I wouldn't recommend them. They don't even give instructions to reset the blanket, you have to phone up their high call charge helpline to find it out.
I would be interested in any decent electric overblanket made by any other company.0 -
I have a memory foam mattress. On top of that is a mattress topper (foam). That is then covered with 2 old fitted sheets (to keep clean).
I then have a heated mattress cover (which is an electric blanket but fitted like a sheet. I couldn't be doing with all the strings on a normal electric blanket).
On top of that I have a fitted mattress cover.
I then have a normal fitted sheet and a flat sheet and a bed cover. (these are the only things I change).
I have had my bed like this for the past 7 years - with no problems. I feel no wires from the heated cover.
By covering the heated mattress cover I find it keeps clean and you don't have to constantly wash it.0 -

It is this one, but with a slightly different controller.

Thank you all. Appreciate the replies.
Will pick one up and not worry about it.Sigless0 -
I have an underblanket which is like a fitted sheet. That covers the whole bed (not the pillow area), and has extra at the bottom for toastie feet. You can't feel any wires (it's on a memory foam mattress), has dual controls, 9 heat settings, a timer, and is safe for all night use.

It heated up very nicely, much better than the new ones with their safety features which struggle to get moderately warm. It got passed down to me so I know how well it worked until it finally failed due to a wire breaking. I would buy another without hesitating but I would still prefer an overblanket.
I haven't been able to fault it.
If I had one complaint, it would be the placement of the connectors for the controllers. They are up near the pillow area, and they can be felt if searching for them.
That is my only complaint though, it's a fantastic blanket.0 -
we have the same issue. Don't heat the bedroom, just heat the bed. We have one of the fitted sheet type dual control electric blanket, and an IKEA mattress topper on top. The heat comes through nicely.
On our spare bed, we bought a small pad that lies on top of the mattress pad. It's for occasional use so we went with that instead. Guests say they are very warm.
We laid a mattress cover on top of it so there wasn't the sensation of lying on coils and they do stay straighter as a result too. HTH.0
