halifax

Have a friend who has a mortgage with Halifax ,husband was self employed .They had ppi included quite a large amount 150 a month.Recently tried to reclaim but Halifax sent a letter saying only a third was ppi rest was life and critical illness.they said the ppi was sold correctly and they had everything explained to them so refused the claim .
However the husband was always self employed and previously while he had no work they asked Halifax for a payment holiday which they granted with no mention of the ppi .My question did Halifax sell ppi insurance to the self employed and what should they do regards trying to reclaim the ppi. Thanks for any help.

  • Most mortgage PPI did cover the self employed, your friend simply needs to check the terms of the insurance for confirmation of this.

Your friend also asked for a "payment holiday" which was granted, but the onus was on him (not the bank) to claim on any insurance policy instead. This is not grounds for complaint.

Most MPPI cover self employed fine. Halifax's does. So, that is not a valid complaint reason with them.

Payment holiday is not something you can claim for on a policy.

  • Thank you I thought they must have known he was self employed to have granted the mortgage. So possibly not miss sold ,just looked at other threads and noted some will only pay in certain situations such as if they cease trading.I think my friend had noted most reclaims for ppi are self employed so thought they had a claim but these are not for mortgages. Thanks for your help .

That is correct. The policy pays out on unemployment. Not holidays and quiet periods.

Credit card and loan PPi tends to be lower quality than mortgage PPI.
