Bust TV from Argos

A couple of years ago my mum bought a 19" HDTV from Argos. A month or so after we did encounter a problem with the remote. It wasn't working but customer service was helpful and we got it working again. Recently the TV will freeze with mutli-coloured lines with a high pitched screeching noise. Bush were helpful again and managed to fix the issue over the phone. However the screeching problem is constant. The help over the phone was a temp fix.

My Mum wants her money. While a new Bush wouldn't be bad, she doesn't want to go down this road again. She would like a refund.

How do we go about it? Argos seem to own bush. An engineer would have to come out and fix it which we would have to pay.

They said we're out of guarantee.

Surely goods should last longer than two years. It is only a TV used in the kitchen.

Isn't there an act like the sales of good act that surely covers us for longer?

Money back would be the best option but I would settle for a new TV for free.

  • How long is 'a couple of years', and how much was the tv? Getting a full refund after two years is very unlikely - you have had two years use of the product.

    The Sale of Goods Act covers you for inherent faults for up to 6 years, but that doesn't mean that all products must last 6 years. Lots of things will determine how long a reasonable time is, such as the cost as jacques_chirac mentioned.

    Also since it is more than 6 months after purchase you may have to prove that the tv is inherently faulty. If the fault was caused by misuse or accidental damage then you aren't covered.
