june ones look ok for summer, which would suggest the meter is accurate.

    £735 for 1489kwh is massive, zero missing - 14890?

Assuming there's a zero missing, winter ones are high, but all depends on how much heating you had on at the time, (at upto 20kw/h over 87 days 9 hrs of heating could clock that up) that's the coldest period where most gas is used, and doesn't explain how you get to 43000kwh/pa

Think I have that wrong, I have cut and pasted this from the above winter bill:

    Start reading: 7177 Actual 08 Jan 13
    End reading: 8753 Actual 05 Apr 13
    Units used 1576 = 17728 KWh (kilowatt-hrs) used
    08/01/13 to 04/04/13 Consumption charge, 17728 kWh x 3.994p = £708.06
    08/01/13 to 04/04/13 Standing charge, 87 days x 31.310p = £27.24
Your gas meter point reference number
    1841765410 Total gas charges £735.30

No i am not sure where 43000 comes from, although 17000 as above, probably similar for oct-jan= 34000 ish then rest of the year, 8000!? think i am trying to convince myself.... this is what's on the end of the last bill.......

You have used 43072kWh of gas and 5992kWh of
electricity during the previous 12 months. The
energy use shown is a total of all applicable
    day/night rates.

take a reading, put the heating on for 1 hour, take a reading

if it's gone up by about 20kwh (1.77m3) or less, the meters probably fine, and you need to look at usage (hours on), thermostat settings,
    and insulation

electricity usage is high too, what bulbs have you got, what are you heating or chilling

Great, i will do that now with the heating. We have large freezer in cellar, fridge freezer in kitchen, but the hob oven etc is all electric. Bulbs-some halogen, but we probably do need to change some looking around to energy ones. We have a few chandelier type light fittings with little candle bulbs.

I think a big problem is me and my husband work shifts so there is always someone at home. Hmmm big over-hall needed or part ex for a modern home. We have looked into insulation but there are no cavities in our walls. Its a lovely old home but very drafty. original floorboards in the hallway-look nice but not very efficient.

ditch the second freezer, make sure the fridge freezer is not set too low 4c fridge -18 freezer, and use the money saved to buy some led or cfl bulbs. turn everything off when not used. should be able to knock £250 off your annual electricity bill

have you got thermostatic radiator valves, and if so, what are they set to

Will look at the bulbs. The radiators have + or -'s on, no temperature, some numbered 0-8, we do have them high in most rooms, some rooms are really warm so we have them around the middle value. While looking today loads of places mention about boiler temperature control and ours only has a thermostat on the actual boiler, no where else? Thanks for that re electric, i will start looking around and seeing what I can do to save money.

setting trv's at max, means they never shut off, and pump (waste) too much heat into one room

you need to leave one or two valves fully open somewhere to protect the pump, eg hall/bathroom, usually for the rad nearest the wall stat if you have one

there are plugin gadgets for around a tenner to tell you how much each appliance is using, esp freezer

It doesn't sound ridiculous for the bill periods you posted, especially with the god awful weather we had up to the end of spring. If you have no room thermostat and an old house the boiler will just keep running while the timer is asking for heat. You can get a wireless one fairly cheaply fitted and even smartphone controlled ones if your hours are erratic. Good thick curtains, loft and wall insulation if appropriate, ad a room thermostat will bring those heating bills crashing down.

This is lovely, you are all very kind!! Walls have no cavities but curtains, carpets etc are all on my list and i will also look at the wireless thermostats and i have changed the valves!
i am thinking the original flooring may have to be covered too....

Right 20:20 pm meter read 9332765
and 21:20 pm meter read 9334029

this obviously includes all the numbers to the end.
    is it ok?!
