Missed direct debit

Hi
Wondering if anyone could help. I renewed my car insurance with the first payment due to come out on the 5th of September by direct debit. I have renewed with the same insurer and paid all last year on direct debit. They phoned me today to say that the direct debit had been rejected. I've no paid this over the phone on my debit card.
I've checked my bank balance and had more than enough to cover the payment, my details haven't changed but they tell me that this will now show up as a late payment and may cause me problems obtaining credit.
Is there anything I can do as I don't think I've done anything wrong!
Thanks

I doubt it - most insurers will need to ask you permission to disclose details of your financial dealings. They cannot do it just because they feel like it. They asked for an alternative method of payment, and you paid - so thatis an end to the matter.
Ask them when the payment was rejected, and ask your bank if they actually did so and why. If not, they've probably entered a digit wrong, so go back to them explaining there was no attempted debit on your account, so they're causing the mistake.
Always remember, irrespective of a DD being in existance, the customer will always remain responsible to pay, even if the retailer screws up.0
