JSA and lectoring

Hi , I could not find a job so am on JSA .

And i saw an advert where somebody ( a private person) was asking for philosophy tutoring so i did so, and did get a reward for it.

I told the jobcentre of this (I try to be honnest) and they did not understand it , made an appointment with the person specially for self employed people,.
That person wasn't working anymore.
Send me to a institute, they could not help me.
they did not know which form to fill in ( they gave me a form for employed people , i am self employed i assume)

at the end i was told to register at Inland revenue, (so i pay sef employed NI contributions,)

the jobcentre doesn't seem to know their own rules about people who are a bit sellf employed does anybody here know them?

    Self-employed and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance
If you are self-employed and get Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
you may be awarded JSA credits but you remain liable for
Class 2 NICs. However, if your earnings from self-employment
are below the small earnings exception level you can apply
for a Certificate of SEE. If awarded, you don’t need to pay
    Class 2 NICs.

Have you tried making an appointment with a Citizens Advice Bureau Benefits Adviser?

Heb je een afspraak maken met een Burgerloket Voordelen Adviseur?

If you mention that you are Dutch they might even be able to find a translator to help?

Indien u vermeld dat u bent Nederlander ze misschien zelfs wel een vertaler te helpen?

I do not speak Dutch but the above ( from an on line translator) might convey the idea?
  • Thanks for that my earnings are below the the small earnings limit, but my interest is not in the HMRC rules, I am interested in the rules about the same subject for the JSA
  • I am trying to work this one out. I think one answer may be that if you earn any money whilst you are claiming JSA, you have to declare this, I think on a B1 form. They allow you to keep £5 of this before the rest is taken off your JSA.
So, if you earn £40 for your work, and your JSA is £70, they will take £35 off your JSA so you are £5 better off for going to work.

If you are taking payment and not registered as self employed just taking the money and not paying tax etc on it, (a govy job round here) then it gets tricky. To declare it, you must be putting it through as pay - either self employed or through a comany.
If you don't declare it and they find out, you could be done for fraud.

To be honnest, I think part time work like this, employed or self employed, is more trouble than its worth as the system can't cope with the changes to peoples income.

It depends on what you are earning. If it is 2 hours a week, then self employed isn't worth it with benefits. There are rules and systems, but the people in the job centre won't know them, it's no longer their job.
You are best getting in touch with your Citizens Advice beaurau who will be able to help you. There is also information on their website and I think there may even be a forum on here somewhere and you can ask questions there.

Sorry, it's all so complicated and no one really knows the answer! Not even the Job Centre / DWP.
