Hi I just wondered if anybody can help at all please.
My son currently lives alone with his 2 year old son, he lives in private rented accomodation and receives CTC, I.S. & HB & CT support.
He is looking to start a fulltime apprenticeship that would pay £150 a week, he has a girlfriend who lives with family, she is 18 nearly 19, is currently claiming Jobseekers Income based but is looking to become a fulltime childcare student at college, they are considering her moving in with my son, can anybody help with what they might be able to claim? Many thanks x

CTC and probably some HB/CT support, much the same (although different amounts) as he'll get when he starts his apprenticeship.0 -
Would they get an increase in anyway for her as she obviously would come off jobseekers, so she wouldn't have an income, i've heard my son should get WTC as the Apprenticeship is fulltime and he receives a payment like a wage?0

When the girlfriend moves in with your son she will lose her income based JSA as all means tested benefits are assessed on joint income and savings.
When your son starts his apprenticeship he will lose his Income Support.
Together (whilst girlfriend is still job seeking) they will be eligible for tax credits, housing benefit, council tax support and child benefit.
They may also be eligible for working tax credits as well as child tax credits. This will depend on your son's apprenticeship. He must be doing at least 24 hours of remunerative work.
Regulation 4(3) of the Working Tax Credit (Entitlement and Maximum Rate) Regulations 2002 is in the following terms:
(3) The number of hours for which a person undertakes qualifying remunerative work is -
(a) in the case of an apprentice, employee or office-holder the number of hours of such work which he normally performs –
(i) under the contract of service or of apprenticeship under which he is employed; or
(ii) in the office in which he is employed;
If the girlfriend becomes a student then this may all change depending on the course she does/if she gets any grants/loans etc. as some of he grants/loans may be taken into account for benefit purposes.
Your son's girlfriend will be able to get some help from the welfare department at her college as regards benefits.
The golden rule is - if your circumstances change you need to notify the benefit departments so they adjust the claim.
So - they will need to notify tax credits and the council re: HB and CT support and Income Support (child benefit is not affected )0 -

She'll have to come off JSA anyway if she's going to college.0 -
Yeah I know that, cheers, I just wondered if they would have got more tax credits or anything else, he'd also have to look into childcare costs and everything too.0
