Opodo - another rip off travel company?

I recently needed to book interconnecting flights. Having used the once excellent Skyscanner site I was directed to Opodo to book the flights at a competitive price.
As I was travelling to Kiev and then Donetsk and then back to Kiev I took the easy option and booked through Opodo rather than through Ukranian airlines as it would be quicker and apparently the easier option.
I received an email titled 'Opodo flight booking confirmation' with the details of all flights listed.
Subsequently I booked hotels, rail travel and other amenities that I require during this trip.
However on checking my emails today I noticed one from Opodo. I assumed it was advertising or some promotional email. However it was from Opodo stating that the booking has not been made and they can't give a reason why.
I now have no flights, have wasted money on hotels and other arrangements. They state in the email that if I ring their premium rate number I can re-book. However the flights are now quoted at 4 x the price I paid.
Am I right in thinking that Opodo works on commision so the more I spend with them the more they make? If so is this a clever ruse they use to force people to book again at a higher cost?

Perhaps put the booking ref and your details in https://www.checkmytrip.com to see if there are any notes describing what happened to the flights.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Since Opodo became part of the eDreams group the number of complaints have gone up significantly. I would forget about them and book a new ticket direct from the airline. And do some research before booking next time, there are plenty of warnings about Opodo out there.0

I am on the verge of giving up using Skyscanner. It isn't even "nearly close" to actual live prices these days
It used to be such a useful tool.0 -

I was thinking that same thing just yesterday.
I honestly don't remember the last time I got the same price, and often the price is over £100+ out.0 -
At least Kayak works. I tried SkyScanner once and it was &^%$.
