Buyers wanting to return for refund and then no contact?

Hi
An odd one here.. Just wanting your thoughts please.
I've been using eBay on my personal account for years and recently we decided buy a number of things out of season to sell on in season on a new business account.
Had two odd ones in the last couple of weeks:
Buyer 1: buys item (leaves positive feedback). Emails a few days later (after trying item out) saying its damaged. We do the decent thing and offer to refund in full upon return (although quite sure it was not damaged!) Buyer happy with this but says he'd rather bring the item in person. We say fine.. and if its easier or closer, he could even go to my partners place of work. Not heard from him again in over a week!!
Buyer 2: also says item damaged. Again offered full refund upon return (using tracked postage) This was 11th August.. Not a peep from him since!
My initial thoughts are that these people possibly were angling for us to say 'here's your refund, keep the item as its no use to us damaged' or a partial refund - particularly with us being a new account (perhaps thinking we are inexperienced on eBay?)
Am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance!

Well just make sure that if buyer 1 turns up, you refund him by paypal and not by cash.0
