Stamping Metal Spoons

Hi all,

I recently bought a lovely hand-stamped spoon for a christening present for my niece.

When I got it I couldn't help but think about how great it would be if I learned to do this and stamped spoons to use as gift tags on hampers or stamp out some garden markers and give them to green-fingered friends for gifts. There are so many possibilities for these!

I've found a tutorial for them here but I wondered if anyone on here had tried them and, if so, which stamps you used? There seem to be loads available at all different prices...

Thanks,

Kevin

  • You are talking of metal stamping as opposed to rubber stamping. Sorry I can't help but there are a lot of metal embossing tools out there.

  • Hello

I have tried this, it is not as easy as it looks :o

My dad has a set of those metal letters so I borrowed them, got a teaspoon out of the kitchen drawer and off I went with my hammer! I don't know what went wrong I think it may have been that the teaspoons were the wrong metal (ie cheap). But I could not get a tidy indent into the spoon. You have reminded me that I meant to give it another go sometime, next time I see Dad I will ask for the stamps again.

Good luck if you try it, let us know how you get on.

    Thanks :)

I read somewhere it only really works with silver plated cutlery as the metal underneath is quite soft... Did you use stainless steel or similar?

    Cheers,

Ah that would be it, I certainly wouldn't have any silver plated in my cutlery drawer! Don't think I will be trying it again then, I couldn't afford silver plated in case I made a mistake

You can get silver plated in charity shops pretty cheap, as well as on eBay etc :) That's where I intend to get mine from anyway!

Thanks I always find with ebay the postage (especially now) makes things more expensive. I will look in charity shops though thanks, how will I tell if they are silver plated? I take it they would be stamped? I will have to google to see what the stamp looks like.

I've tried this & it can be quite hard - I've used silver plated knives & spoons, a rubber hammer to flatten the bowl & some metal alphabet dies that I bought specifically for this.

I think that sterling silver is the best as that's softer and more malleable than plated silver. Some of the plated ones I used cracked around the edges of the spoon bowl whereas the silver one didn't.

Another tip is to go over the stamped letter with a black sharpie then wipe clean - it makes the letters stand out more.

You see these in quite a few US & Canadian blogs but they seem to be able to pick up pieces of sterling silver cutlery cheaply at their thrift shops - whereas here it costs a fortune - if you can find an old one lurking somewhere :).
