have an account with them but used a CC this time and they took 2 x£1 out my account, showing as pending so probably not going to be taken just checking I have the account but due to them doing that my cash I had in for the product got declined. do they normally take 2 lots of £1 out?
I emailed them but got no reply

  • Yes that is normal I think.
The more worrying thing to me seems that you were that close to your CC limit that £2 coming out plus the product cost put you over your limit.

I thought this, but re-reading makes me wonder whether the two attempts to draw a quid seemed like suspicious activity hence the card issuer put a stop to any further transactions. Rather than the extra quid putting the OP over their limit... which does sound a bit like bad financial planning, I agree :D

  • no its a cash has to be in CC not a normal one which is why it annoyed me as I deposited the exact amount for the item
  • Oh I see.

Is there a fee for using the card per transaction, or anything like that as well?
Apart from that then, yes often when buying things on my CC, pre-authorisation amounts have been taken, usually for things that are to be provided at a later date like in your instance, tescos online orders, hotel rooms in the future. Is just to prove that the CC exists i think.

This is pretty normal and I guess they take a small amount to try not to bust people's limits. But when you're depositing the exact amount such as you've done, then yeah, you'll run into problems. Best to try to stick an extra fiver in each time I suppose, to cover stuff like this.
