Trying to close card account that was taken over by Barclay's.

Hello.

I seem to have problem closing down a Barclaycard account. The account in question was previously an Egg credit card. Barclaycard took over from Egg credit card in November 2011.

The Egg account was empty at the time of the takeover and my last egg card I got sent in 2010 was never activated.

On my credit report this account is stated as active, is a Barclaycard account and ends in my egg card number.

I cannot for the life of me find any card or information since Barclaycard took over egg. I only have my old egg card from 2010. When I phone Barclaycard CS and try to enter my 16 digit number to try and close the account it comes up as not recognised. The card is registered to an old address, but my father still lives there, so any correspondence I would have received.

I really need to close this account ASAP as I want to apply for a mortgage soon and could do with reducing my access to credit.

I have just emailed Barclaycard the above and got a generic response to ring the CS number that I have tried already. Do they not even read emails properly! With this number it is impossible to get put through to a human being.

Will I have to write to them?

You should still be able to phone them.

I used to put 0000 0000 0000 0000 in as my number just to get through to someone when I tried to phone them without my card (Albeit that was a year or so ago).

Do you have an online account you can get into?

Often shows the full account number on there.

No I don't have online access for this card. The egg card was never activated prior to the Barclaycard takeover. I did have access to the egg account but that website has long gone.

Maybe the account is closed (and has been closed for quite a while) and it is the entry in your credit report that is wrong.

Yes that could be true.

I am going to send a letter to Barclays Customer Relations tomorrow and get this cleared up.
