My children are 13 and 9. They really enjoy the games we play, and the youngest likes to help with cooking Christmas dinner. Those are the 2 best bits of the day (apart from the presents) in their opinions.

Get up, open presents, eat breakfast, watch tv and build/play with presents. Eat dinner, go for a walk if it's nice enough, try and clean up a bit, more toys, tv etc. It's quite repetitive really but I love it :)

Hi op, I know how you feel - its always husband, daughter and I and I find it so boring so this year we are going away.

Its difficult as I come from a large family so was used to Christmas with my brothers and sisters - lots of people to talk to, playing games etc so Christmas day itself feels really tiresome and boring now. Hubby, daughter and I spent Christmas with my family a couple of years ago but hubby is from a really quiet family and found Christmas with my lot difficult (loud!) so I don't feel like I can keep inflicting it upon him each year!

At home, the only thing I enjoy is the build up as I generally love the Christmas season, and on the day itself, I love seeing my daughters face when she wakes up, and then going to church, but after that, it just drags and I can't wait til it's over so I can see people!

Really excited to go away this year and see what that is like.

I have spent Christmas day with friends before and I didn't enjoy that much (as lovely as my friends are!) as it is difficult fitting in with other peoples traditions. My ideal day would be waking up at home and doing presents etc, and then seeing family in afternoon and evening then back home for bed but unfortunately, they live too far away to just drop in for a few hours

I love the thought of going away for Christmas, but i wont be able to afford it as it's too short notice to save up this year. Maybe next year though :) Have a great time!
  • Hoping this year to wake up with 17 month old, open presents, go to church around 10am with son, mum and my nan (hubby, stepdad and grandad won't go!) then go to inlaws for Xmas lunch with three sisters in law and their partners, then over to my mums in the evening to see my side of the family. Boxing Day I either go to the sales or visit people all day again. Hubby goes back to work afterwards and has to work New Year's Day so we make a fuss of Boxing Day too

Last year we went Ice skating on Christmas day, it was open 11-3pm and completely free but hoping to raise money for a charity so donations welcome. If they do it again this year we will go again because it broke the day up nicely.

I don't celebrate it at all. Personally, it's just a day, but of course it's a little different for me too as everyone else is behaving differently. I can't go to a museum or shopping, and I wouldn't suggest spending time with friends who do celebrate it as I suspect they're busy. So, I usually stay home and just do whatever I feel like for the day. Read a book, work on a project, anything really.

However the key point is do what you want. There's no right or wrong, the expectations and social pressure connected to it aren't really justifiable. Whatever significance you place on it, it is still a day in your personal life to spend how you want. So, if you're sticking up decorations, cooking turkey and swapping presents because you feel that's what you must do, rather than because you enjoy it, then it's time to change.

    ...We play monopoly ...

    There's your problem lol.
But seriously; I love monopoly (I have 9 different themed sets), but it certainly isnt a great game to play as a family unless everyone is really into the game too. People get distracted just waiting for their turn, miss rent, start arguments and generally lose interest. I'd suggest as presents this year getting some more interesting games: look at the top list on BoardGameGeek (here) from which I can recommend 7 Wonders, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Love Letter (BRILLIANT), Settlers of Catan (great transition from Monopoly to other board games), Citadels, Pitch Car... just to list a few from near the top.
Get people some games they'll want to keep playing through the afternoon and you'll have great fun!

Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.

It really bores me too nowadays, apart from seeing the Grandkids open their prezzies.I hate most Xmas food as am veggie, so we usually go for an Indian meal.My best ever Xmas Day was when we went to Goa for 2 weeks, and swam in the sea Xmas morn, then went to a circus and had a lovely banquet at night:D:D
