Inspiration for all day food please:)

Hello,

Need to pick some brains please:D

Next weekend I will have a houseful of people - 10 in all, staying from Friday night til Sunday morning. Friday is okay, got plenty of time to sort out picking people up, feeding and watering them etc., but Saturday is going to be very, very busy, so I thought I would get everyone to just feed themselves, as they wanted to.

Got breakfast figured out, so what I need from you is ideas for a casserole (or something) that I can make on Friday and that will be fine kept on a low heat in the oven all day on Saturday. Thought that and some crusty bread to dunk would work.
Had thought of Lancashire hot pot., but guess all the lovely crispy pots on top would disappear with the first couple of bowlfuls:p

Any ideas gratefully received.

  • I'd make a huge salad, and cook some jacket spuds and prep some garlic breads and tell people to warm them up in the oven in batches half an hour before they are hungry. Either that or a massive soup or stew but I wouldn't keep it on heat all day, again I'd warm it up in say 3 batches for when people are going to be there. So I'd make 3 batches and have them in the fridge in separate containers. That and loads of crusty bread for eating when they want.

if you have a slow cooker you could make up a casserole in the morning to be ready from mid afternoon and the few extra hours cooking wouldnt do it any harm

I have done this occasionally if I am working late for OH and DS so they can get their tea when they get in and I only have myself to sort out later. Feedback I have been given is that red meat tends to work best as chicken goes stringy and sausages taste pastie if they are left too long

Chilli, Spag Bol sauce type things and baked potatoes would go down well.

Have you got a slow cooker? Great at keeping things warm all day. Or a hostess trolley.

  • A favourite in our house is this, the cassereep was made by the amerindians to preserve the meat and the pepperpot was the focal point of the village, added to and kept warm for years:eek: National dish of Guyana!http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/580472

Although it's not a casserole if I am catering for more than my immediate family on a casual basis I make sure I have some whole chickens or chicken pieces and have salads/ veggie side dishes pre-prepared in the fridge, eg, potato salad, cous cous, green salad, roasted peppers and French bread to chop up just before. I find it's the least offensive for different tastes and there should be something for everyone.
  • Thanks to everyone-decision made:T

My slow cooker is too small to do the whole thing, so will be making some lovely soup, for those who fancy it, lots of chicken, ham and salads to pick at, crusty bread and cheeses.

Should keep everyone happy, and no nervous breakdown for me:j
