Job Offer - Awkward P45 moment!

So here is the deal...

...I left a role end of July to start a new role which was a complete career change. Its been a disaster and I've just been offered a role
doing something similar to the role I was originally doing

I didnt want to put on my CV that I was quitting a job after barely 2 months so just said that I was about to leave the other role

Options -

1) Hand in P45 from old role, leaving out the one from the short-term role
2) Just give in P45 (Should I get it) from this short-term role and hope that HR wont notice as its a massive company
3) Just say I've lost P45 and fill in P46 and hope I dont get emergency taxed??

You can get the address of the new jobs ta office and send it in yourself to them. They then in turn will send the company notification or sign a P46 and say it got lost in the post between the last job etc.

If you fill in a P46 you will most likely be emergency taxed, but ask yourself the question - is the temporary issue at hand (emergency tax) more important than not exposing your short term job? For most people I'm guessing they'd be willing to take the hit on emergency tax to avoid being in that situation knowing that it will likely be given as a rebate in the new year.

Just how temporary are we talking? I cant really afford paying additional tax with mortgage repayments.

If this is now your only job, completing the P46 ( it has been changed to an online form for your employers ) and saying this is your only job will see you being given the emergency tax code of 944L. This gives our full allowances so you will not pay additional tax.

Then send your P45 to HMRC keeping the top part for yourself.
  • So you didn't hand in your P45 from original job though you have been employed for a couple of months by the next? If you didn't, then the tax on the (current?) job will be emergency tax (ie 944L). If you did, then you don't have a P45 from the original to hand over.

Other than "lost in the post", whey would you not get a P45 from current job?

This current role, i was never asked for p45 from previous role. Just asked a
Couple of questions about if this was my only job and student loan. I have not been taxed extra. My tax code at previous role was also 944L. I did get p45 from that role but was never asked to produce it

If that was the case then you would have been put on the Emergency tax code of 944L Mth1. To have been taxed correctly you really should have given them the P45. What tax code is on the P45 - Box 6 will give this information. Has the box beneath it marked Week 1/Month 1 got an X in it?

It is quite possible that you have underpaid tax.
My tax code at previous role was also 944L.

With or without Mth 1 suffix?
I did get p45 from that role but was never asked to produce it

It is your responsibility to hand it over although some employers will ask.
  • what about references?

Surely your old employer will say that you left 2 months prior to what you are saying?

Oh so you have told them you were at the job two months longer?

Why did you just not say you left the job 2 months ago and took some time out ie not telling lies about when you left and missing out this job you have had for 2 months?
