Going from JSA to self employed?

Does anyone know how someone would go about doing this and also if they are actually able to do it? Also any details? I know you need to be self employed (without getting working tax credits) for a certain amount of time before receiving them but I don't know how long or how long you'd need to be signed off before being able to be self employed... I cant seem to find the info on the internet so I am asking here
Thanks :)

  • There is no waiting time to claim tax credits on the basis of self employment but you need to be working in expectation of payment so starting up qualifies but I would say you would need at least be out of the planning stage.

'The amount of time being spent on these activities may also depend upon how established the business is. If a business is in its early days, it is more likely that the claimant will have to invest large amounts of time and effort in building up business contacts for little or no outcome. However, over time the amount of unproductive time spent in this way reduce considerably. If it does not, it may be an indication that the work is not genuinely remunerative.'

I started up as a self-employed cleaner after having been on JSA for almost 12 months.
I am not sure where you heard that 'you need to be self employed (without getting working tax credits) for a certain amount of time before receiving them' from, but that's not correct in my experience.
I signed off JSA and applied for WTC on the same day, no problems.
  • Please don't become a self employed writer. If so only grief and an epic thread lasting years lays ahead.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
