Another question about prepayment meters

Someone said on a question I posted about PP meters earlier that you can only have £49 at a time - I think that's what they said: but does this mean you can only put £49 on the key? Or that you can only have £49 at the most on the meter?

So if I had a PP meter, could I get £49 on it on 1st December, then £49 on 2nd December, and then £49 on the 3rd of December, to have £147 on it, to last for a few weeks/1 or 2 months over the cold weather? Or is £49 the most you can have on the meter?

Thanks in advance.
