GCSE remark advice

Just wondering if anyone has experience/advice?
My daughter got an A pass in her GSCE French - she was happy - in the actual listening and reading test she got 100% (A* equivelant) , however the coursework part she had done in school got marked down from an "A" to a "B" - thus she got A overall.

I had a phone call from the head of MFL at her school saying that they were not happy about the coursework being marked down and that they thought her work should be remarked as in their opinion she had been hard done by, but for this to happen she would need to sign a form and we would need to pay £32ish (which you get back if grade is marked up).

However my daughter is worried to do this as she believes that it is also possible for work to be marked down and that she could end up with a B overall! (Teacher said she was 7 marks from an A* )

Just wondered if anyone had experience of this and what happened?

Thanks in advance :)

In the grand scheme of things it's not going to better her life in the long term. I wouldn't bother.

  • I'd echo the view it's not going to make a big difference to her. I'd say at her age she should be the one making the choice, and it seems clear she's happy as she is (and your £32 better off)

How big are the grade boundaries? 7 marks off an A* could be 3 marks off a B, and your daughter is right - remarks can go down as well as up. Unless she is planning to apply to a very prestigious university like Oxbridge or similar where they will look back at GCSEs and want loads of A*s, I personally wouldn't bother. If the school thought all the marking was wrong it would be paying for remarks, so the fact that you have to pay suggests it isn't a widespread issue with the marking, rather a teacher being surprised at your daughter's grade. This would make me think she is probably unlikely to gain an extra 7 marks in a remark for an A*.

Well done on her achievements though!
  • Thanks everyone - I have no idea about boundaries etc and really I am only going off what teacher has said (he said there were 22 pupils that they were contacting about being marked down ) so probably prohibitive for school to pay!
I have discussed it with my daughter, and we did say that in the grand scheme of things it would not really matter as she got great results and has not gone on to study French anyway!
    Thanks again

Another one here who wouldn't bother. As a teacher who sent back 6 papers to be regraded last year (at the school's expense), only to find that none of the grades got changed, I would say that very few people are advantaged by having their papers regraded. I would only consider it now if it was really going to affect someone significantly in future (e.g. they got a D and they would be in for a good shout at a C if the paper was re-marked). Wishing your daughter all the best in her studies OP :)

Sounds like the teacher would benefit from the regrades more than the pupils.

Thanks - I am thinking now - could this be more for the schools benefit maybe? Thanks for all the comments :)

Hmm, 22 students all getting lower grades than the teacher expected, looks to me more like the teacher has over-marked course work and is trying to save their own hide.

Just to play Devil's advocate: a friend of my daughter had a GCSE German remarked up by 9 marks so she got an A*. It's unlikely if she got a solid A she'll go down. I'd check the website for the exam board to see, but 7 marks is a fair bit. If the school is certain there's an issue they should get a remoderation.
