Emergency Tax

I have recently started a new job august 7th. Well went back to where I worked before last year. Because they had deleted me they put me on emergency code. I filled out a P46 and have phoned tax office twice. The gentleman I spoke to on Friday said they will send my tax code to my employer. I just wandered how long it would take to get sorted and when I will get this over tax payment back. Im hoping it will be sorted for my next paydate on the 20th which will go through on the 17th obviously takes three days (BACS). If not I suppose the paydate after that. Its mounting up quite alot atm.

  • Providing your employer's payroll updates the information, it should rectify itself quickly. I recently got my tax code changed from BR to the correct one and it seems fairly straightforward once the Tax Office has the information. You should get any overpaid tax repaid automatically with your wages. I would check your employer has received your updated tax code in the next few days and they should be able to process it in time for your next wage. It once took me 18 months to get changed from BR tax code, but that was only because the payroll at my work was useless

Ok I will email them on Thursday to see what they say. Gave the tax office six days then it should hopefully be sorted for my next payday. And I will get back what they took in emergency.

If you filled out a P46 and this is your only job, you should have been put on a 944L tax code. Is this correct?

If it's the proper emergency tax code of 944L that shouldn't see too much of an overpayment unless you weren't working from April till August.

I am being put on 944L when tax office send notice of coding to my job. Im currently on OT as a tax code. I have filled out a P46 which goes off to payroll who then said it to the tax office to obtain my tax code. Hopefully it will be recified for my next payday. I will try to email on Thursday to find out whether they've received my code from tax office. In fact I will email them now to say that I have phoned tax office and they should get notice of coding soon.

The 0T code is used in the absence of a P45 or P46.

Once a P46 is completed, your employer simply uses the tax code that the P46 tells them to which is 944L, 944L Mth1 or BR.
