Asking for feedback? Seller opinions please

I don't sell now (maybe one item in 5 years!) so I'd like sellers' opinions. I bought an item within the last 10 days, received it and hadn't got round to leaving feedback yet (I leave it in bulk maybe twice a month which I know some sellers don't like but suits me.) I received an email saying "hi, please leave me feedback." Nothing else, not "Has it arrived safely and if it has could you please leave me feedback?". So I left feedback but sent them a message pointing out that I'd actually never been bothered for feedback without at least checking I had my item in 12 years and so I'd left them no communication stars because I didn't feel able to leave 5 stars. Got a disgusting message back accusing me of being rude for pointing this out (reported it to live chat who told me I never have to leave feedback if I don't want to).

Surely as sellers, if you do ask for feedback, you ask in a way that shows some interest in whether I'm actually happy with my item? Or is it just me? I now wish I'd left neutral with a comment about their communication rather than a positive and letting them know my feelings by the messaging service!

I never ask for feedback. No news is good news as far as I'm concerned.
  • It really annoys me when people ask for feedback - it's a hassle leaving it and I'll do it when I get round to it - unless it's really bad or really good, naturally. I know it shouldn't annoy me but it does!

OP you've just been reminded (assuming you'd forgotten) that there are a lot of people around with no manners at all. If you sell general stuff on ebay you are dealing with the great unwashed. Some are really nice, others not so, just pot luck.

I never ask for feedback but when buying something always leave it. That also helps me keep up with the stuff that I have brought has actually arrived.

I hate the Ebay e-mails reminding buyers to leave feedback. Sometimes people leave me feedback for something I have sold and put some kind of message that sounds like they think I sent the e-mail reminding them to leave feedback!

That's exactly what I do and recommend. Most buyers just want the item and don't want dialogue with a seller unless there's a problem. Occasionally buyers are so happy that they send a message of thanks, which I always respond to, but that's it.

Besides, if there is no contact between buyer and seller, if the buyer leaves feedback, the communication rating will default to five stars, so it's in every seller's interests to avoid communication with a buyer! The moment a seller sends a message to a buyer (or vice versa) the automatic 5-star rating for communication disappears and the buyer can leave any star rating between 1 and 5.

It's just a quirk of the eBay system! ;)

I've had that one but know it's automated - and I think it actually mentions leaving feedback if you are happy with your item (you can turn it off but I know sellers might not know that). The seller definitely wrote this one!

But thats only if you post within one working day,and its stipulated on your listing isnt it?

I hate being chased for feedback an tend not to leave any if bothered for it.
  • Yes i've had that aswell, but I hadn't even received their item yet!

I just assume no news is good news too.

I would have left a positive saying "as requested, here is your feedback" then only given them a 3 star for communication for being annoying!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • I don't leave feedback if the other party to the trade annoy me- simple.

ebay are a law unto themselves.

Royal mail even worse- many people I know steer clear as buyers as p&p costs are getting insane and delivery times becoming a joke.
