When are currants usually ready for picking?
I have blackcurrants and redcurrants and quite few have gone black or red whilst alot are still green.
Do i pick them gradually when as soon as they are ripe and how long do they keep for?

Some of my whitecurrants are ready now, while others are still ripening. I've spotted a couple of redcurrants but not many. I don't have any blackcurrants yet. I freeze mine instead of eating them fresh, then turn them into sauce or icecream when I have enough. I would think they'd be okay for a couple of days in the fridge.

I use all my blackcurrants for jam and I tend to pick and freeze them as they become ripe. The hard part is getting them before the birds, I have a net up but I have noticed some of the bird are pecking at the berries through the net. I will need to get longer stakes to raise the net higher above the bush.

The birds don't stand a chance in my garden, it's more a case of getting them before hubby eats them straight off the plant;)
